Aston Trelford - Biography
Aston Trelford was a gentle, kind, and brilliant man whose intellectual curiosity and warm nature touched everyone around him. He served as a role model, a source of strength, a confidant, and an inspiration to those who knew him, particularly to his family. His life was rich in experiences, and through the years, he shared stories that reflected his remarkable journey.
Born into a world at war, Aston's early memories were shaped by being "the man of the house" alongside his mother, Lavinia, while his father was away serving in North Africa. He often recalled how his father's return from the war required some adjustment for the family. Despite this, he cherished the time spent hearing his father's tales from the war, particularly about his adventures in North Africa.
Aston's childhood was marked by stark contrasts, from his early days in the rural beauty of Northumberland to the more industrial surroundings of Consett. These years were formative, filled with stories of street play, errand-running, encounters with local bullies, and the colorful lives of relatives involved in less conventional pursuits like bookmaking. He often spoke of these times with great fondness, particularly of the mischief and adventure that colored his younger years.
As an adult, Aston built a different life for his own family, first in Great Barton and later in Sussex. However, the profound loss of his second son, Stephen, during their time in Great Barton deeply affected the entire family and shaped their experiences together. Over the years, Aston ensured that his children stayed connected to their roots. Family trips to Consett became a regular occurrence, and although the long car rides weren’t always appreciated by his children at the time, they evolved into cherished memories. Aston would proudly showcase the rugged beauty of the Northumberland countryside, and family gatherings in local working men’s clubs were always a highlight. During his teenage years, the same countryside had been a place of escape for Aston, where he would disappear for entire days, cycling through the open fields.
In his professional life, Aston seized every opportunity that came his way. His big break arrived in Suffolk at Kirby Warrick, a post he often described as his "make or break" moment—the greatest technical challenge of his career. Aston was never one to shy away from risk, which later led him to accept a job in Lugano, Switzerland. This move provided his family with a memorable summer, which he would often recount with a favorite anecdote involving his wife Dorothy, his son Gareth, and a lizard's tail.
Eventually, Aston and his family settled in West Sussex, but the ties to Suffolk remained strong. Many wonderful Christmases were spent with close family friends, Brian and Karin, and their children, Morten and Kristian. Their home in Sussex was always full of life, welcoming friends for summer barbecues and long evenings of conversation in the garden that stretched late into the night.
As Aston's career in chemistry flourished, he became known not only for his expertise but also for his generous spirit. Colleagues, especially younger ones just starting out, often spoke of his kindness, support, and mentorship. He made a lasting impact on many lives, earning the admiration and affection of those he worked with.
Above all, Aston was dependable. Whether family, friends, or colleagues, whenever anyone needed him, he was there, ready to lend a hand. His legacy is one of kindness, wisdom and unwavering support, qualities that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
